About Georgia

Georgia is the largest of the southern states, and its capital, Atlanta, is considered
the Capital of the deep south. Atlanta itself is a wild aberration compared to the rest
of the state which is overwhelmingly rural. To the north lie the Smokey Mountains. part of the
Appalachian Mountain Range that stretches a thousand miles from Georgia in the South to Maine in the North.
To the south lies the flat agricultural heartlands.
Georgia, named after King George II, was originally a penal colony, located in Savannah,
on the Atlantic coast bordering South Carolina.
To the east of Atlanta lies Athens, a university town most noted for producing REM
and the B-52's.
Away from the bustle of Atlanta, anywhere interesting to see usually consists of at
least a 5 hour journey by road. To understand its size, you could probably fit most
of the UK within its state boundaries.
The climate in Georgia ranges from temperate in the north to sub-tropical in the south.
Winters are short (3 months or so) and the summers tend to be stiflingly humid and hot.
Without doubt, the best times to visit are in the spring and autumn.
Atlanta also boasts a large celebrity community, many former movie stars choosing to
relocate here rather than put up with the idiosyncrasies and expense of Hollywood.
Elton John has a home here in upmarket Buckhead.
The deep south generally tends to be slow paced compared to the more frenetic
lifestyles of the North East; and southerners are noted for their warmth and friendliness.
Compared with many parts of the US, the cost of living and the tax rates are low.
Famous Georgians include Martin Luther King, Jimmy Carter (peanut farmer turned
President), Otis Reading, James Brown and Little Richard.
It's been a while since the site was last revamped, so many things have happened! Our lives flow gently from one challenge to another, but we keep smiling and laughing, after all, what else is there?
